German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, Became an Honorary Doctor of
Comenius University in Bratislava

Comenius University in Bratislava (CU) has awarded an honorary title Doctor
Honoris Causa (Dr. h. c.) to the Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel.
The Chancellor of Germany, who received a title during the ceremonial joined
meeting of the University Scientific Council and the Faculty Scientific
Councils, has become the third woman to receive an honorary doctorate in
the history of the oldest and biggest University of Slovakia.
“Please accept the honorary title as a sign of respect, reverence and
admiration for your academic and political work, as an expression of
appreciation for an exceptional contribution to international co-operation with
regard to Europe’s development and for your support of education and
scientific research for our common European future,” said the Rector of CU,
Prof. RNDr. Karol Mičieta, PhD., during the ceremonial meeting.
Prof. RNDr. Jozef Masarik, DrSc., the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics,
Physics and Informatics of CU, which had suggested an honorary award,
presented the German Chancellor’s scientific career and her cooperation with
CU in his speech: “During her studies and her scientific career she has
actively collaborated with physical chemists – Professor Urban and Professor
Kelle – from the Faculty of Natural Sciences of CU and with Professor Hubač
from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of CU."
"Universities are engines of innovations, economic development; they are
investments in education, investments in young people, investments in the
future of our countries. However, the presenting of knowledge is just one
side. The other side, which is equally important, was pointed out by the
patron of your University – John Amos Comenius. He said that schools were
spaces where humanity was born and where people became real people,"
said the Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, after being awarded an
Angela Merkel (116th honorary title holder) has been assigned to the ranks of
the prominent personalities – honorary doctors of CU among whom were
former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Atta Annan, (1999), 14th
Dalai Lama and a Nobel Peace Prize winner, Tenzin Gyatso, (2000), and a
winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Gerhard Ertl, (2009). The honorary
doctorate of CU was also awarded to the world famous microbiologist, Ján
Vilček, on January this year.
